SDES provides residential and day camps for children living with diabetes (ages birth – 17 years) and their family members, as well as Community Family Events throughout the year in 8 communities in Alabama including Birmingham. Each program has a fee, but scholarships are available for our camp programs based on financial need. SDES is the only organization in Alabama that assembles diabetes healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, and certified diabetes educators to teach children and families critical diabetes care skills in a fun, “out-of-clinic” setting. Camp Seale Harris was founded in 1949 and remains the only overnight camp for children with diabetes in Alabama. It is conducted on Lake Martin in June. Camp Sugar Falls Birmingham is a local summer day camp option annually in July. Please see our website for more information.
