Celebrating 2 years! The Magic City went smoke free on June 1st, 2012 a day after the World Health Organization’s World No Tobacco Day. Let’s celebrate a smoke-free city on May 31st. This is a time for organizations all over the world to highlight the health risks related to tobacco use. Globally, tobacco use is the most preventable cause of death. 1

Fact: Tobacco use leads to at least 10% of all deaths.1

Fact: Smokers are 30 to 40% more likely to develop type 2 diabetes than nonsmokers. People with diabetes who smoke have more difficulty controlling their diabetes and are more likely to have serious health complications, such as:

  • Heart and kidney disease
  • Poor blood flow that can lead to infection and potential need for amputation
  • Retinopathy (an eye disease that can lead to blindness)
  • Neuropathy (damaged nerves that can lead to numbness and pain in the arms and legs)2

Interested in learning more? If you are a smoker this World No Tobacco Day, consider making a plan to quit or start smoking less. Here are some tips to help you get started:

  • Prepare yourself to quit by setting a quit date and telling friends and family
  • Write down your reasons for quitting and post them where you can see them every day
  • Ask someone who smokes to consider quitting with you
  • Throw away ashtrays and lighters
  • Choose a strategy like quitting gradually and cutting down by a set number each week; using a patch, gum, or spray; asking your doctor for a prescription medicine; or quitting all once.3

Also, try calling the Alabama Tobacco Quit Line at 1.800.784.8669 for free telephone support for any Alabamian who wants to quit tobacco. They also offer online support on their website.
